Performing Security Audits for Small Businesses

Keeping a small company secure is a key part of running a business. The security of a company is important across all areas of the business, including:

  • Assets
  • IT
  • Physical security

Even the largest companies can miss things when performing self-audits. That is why it is crucial to hire a Private Investigative firm to perform an audit on your small business. At CIAPI, not only can we perform the security audit, but we can walk you through step-by-step so you can understand what we are looking at, why, and how to perform smaller checks throughout the year to keep your small business safe in between audits.

Creating a secure small business means auditing all possible avenues. We will sit with you and develop a plan based on what needs to be done. We will request a list of all assets, both tangible and intangible.

Tangible assets would include:

  • Computers and computer equipment
  • Machinery
  • Inventory of office supplies

Intangible assets can be harder to define. This is where you decide how deep you would like the audit and what categories of intangible assets you would like audited.

The next step would be to create a list of threats that could potentially harm your assets. We will want to secure your computer network against hackers and malware. We also want to make sure employees are properly trained to recognize threats and participate in safe network practices.

Other threats can include:

  • Physical damage
  • Incomplete backups
  • Lack of protection for employees and customers
  • Email spam

We will request a history of the company to take into consideration previous threats your small business may have encountered. From there, we will use it as an opportunity to learn, audit, devise a plan, and help your company safely grow.

CIAPI’s Private Investigators will create a priority list. While all aspects of a small business are valuable, others are slightly more important. We want to make sure we are first focusing on the most important assets for protection before moving on to the rest. For example, securing your customer database not only protects you, but your customers. Almost nothing can ruin a small business faster than customers feeling as though their personal information is not safe in your database. Coming back from such a breach could be costly.
